Before old man winter arrives, and believe me, it’s coming soon, it is customary to bring in the lawn furniture, wrap indoor pipes, repair the roof, and put gardens to sleep. When it comes to our cars, we get them ready for the season as well. Checking engine coolant and antifreeze levels, refilling windshield wiper fluid, measuring tire pressure, and inspecting the battery, brakes, hoses, and spark plugs are all important things to do before the snow falls. But winterizing a garage door? It’s not something most people think of, less do. We often take our garage door system for granted and rarely consider doing preventative maintenance. Did you know that most garage door issues happen more in the winter than any other season? Performing preventative maintenance will avoid potential problems and possible breakdowns. When was the last time you had a winter tune-up, less any other type of seasonal or annual tune up on your garage door? Here’s what we know.
Your garage door system consists of your door, opener, inside wall switch, remote controls, and optional keypad. It is made up of several moving parts that work together to lift and close a door that can weigh hundreds of pounds. You rely on it every day to operate upon demand. When the temperature changes or suddenly drops to 35 degrees or less, lots of things can happen. If lubrication in the motor thickens, the door will be jerky or get stuck. Springs can become brittle and easily split especially if they’re old. Gears may break because the opener works harder in the cold to open and close the door. Condensation and ice build-up at the bottom of your door can make it difficult or impossible to open. Moisture can significantly stress your opener and/or keypad, so much that it may need replacement. Basically, your garage door is under constant attack from freezing and damp weather conditions. I’ll bet you had no idea that all of this could be going on in your garage during the winter months that could create a potential emergency service call. You wouldn’t leave your vehicles, or the rest of your home unprotected from the elements, so don’t leave your garage door system unprotected either. It’s easy with Aladdin Doors Winter Maintenance and Tune-Up.
If it’s been a while since your last service call on your garage door system, I’m sure it’s been even longer since you’ve had maintenance done. That’s why it’s important to schedule an appointment now. Our winter tune-up will inspect, adjust, and/or lubricate:
- All mechanical components (springs, chains, pulleys, rollers, hinges, etc.)
- Tracks for damage, cracking or debris
- Door operation to detect rough, uneven movement, as well as scraping or grinding, and door balance
- Garage door opener operation and safety sensor function
- Warp, rust, or excessive wear on the garage door, panels, or sections
- The bottom rubber seal and weather stripping around the door to make sure it seals the door tightly when closed
Our technical staff will make sure that everything is in proper working order and note any warning signs that indicate a part may fail in the future. If you are in need of replacing any parts immediately, we will let you know. If it’s something that can be fixed down the road, we’ll let you know as well. Work outside the tune up will only begin upon your approval. The good news is that we carry all standard replacement parts in our vehicles so we can handle it on the spot. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks and all credit cards and will email your receipt for easy record keeping. Additionally, if you’re considering replacing your garage door or opener, we’d be happy to discuss it with you. We can provide estimates, brochures and color samples as requested.
